The Mercator folding knife is probably the best-known product from the Solinger knive forge Otter. Originally the knife was developed by the Indiawerk in 1867, produced and also legally protected as a 'German Reich utility model'. First, it was part of the basic equipment of the German army in the First World War. After the end of the Second World War, it became a popular souvenir of the Allies and became a cult object overseas.

Otter acquired the trademark rights for the Mercator folding knife in 1995 and now produces it under the highest quality standards in Solingen. The standard version with powder coated iron box and the iconic cat engraving is still traced by hand with real gold color.
